Boyd Afterschool 4-H

BoydWelcome to Boyd 4-H, an after-school 4-H club dedicated to helping our community youth to become leaders.  How did Boyd 4-H begin?  With the help of the Collin County AgriLife Extension Service, Boyd Elementary began a 4-H After School Club in 2006/2007. At Boyd the program is designed for kids in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Students who join Boyd 4-H are also able to participate in any of the Collin County activities outside of the Boyd 4-H Club.

What do you do in 4-H?

There are many things that you can do in 4-H, and the cool thing is–YOU CAN DECIDE! We have had Food and Nutrition projects where kids learned to make and serve a meal, we learned to make no-sew blankets and donated them to charity…we even learned to do STEP routines!

I thought 4-H was all about farm animals. What if I don’t live on a farm?

Some people confuse 4-H with FFA. While raising and showing livestock is something 4-H students can participate in, our club at Boyd is focused on Leadership Training, Community Service, and Special Interests such as cooking, sewing, dancing, and other non-agricultural activities.

Will Boyd 4-H ever have agricultural activities?

We hope so. Our 4-H club is run completely by volunteers and through donations. We are always looking for community members and organizations who can donate their time to our club or partner with us on a project. If you know someone who could help our club get involved with agriculture, please contact our club sponsors!

How do I volunteer?

In order to volunteer you must first submit a volunteer application form to Allen ISD. Once you are approved as a district volunteer, contact one of our Boyd 4-H sponsors and let them know what you’d like to do to help us!

The Story of Boyd Elementary
In the late 1970′s, when Jupiter was only a dirt road and Allen was still a very small town, Alton Boyd Elementary was built in the pasture at the corner of Jupiter and Bethany. The surrounding neighborhood was young and growing rapidly. At that time there was only one other elementary school in Allen. The tradition in Allen ISD is to name new schools in honor of outstanding citizens in the community who have had a positive impact on the education of our children. This honor was bestowed on a long time Allen resident known as Alton “Papa” Boyd, a carpenter by trade, who was extremely active in the educational community. He was a student in Allen from 1914-1920. Alton Boyd served on the school board from 1936-1963 and as president of the board from 1946-1961. Boyd also served on the Collin County school board from 1963-1975.
Dedication to the educational community did not stop with “Papa” Boyd. His daughter was a school librarian in the district for many years and his son-in-law served as principal of Rountree.
Boyd Elementary proudly celebrates almost 30 years of educating the youth of Allen. Twenty years of dedicated teachers, administrators and staff, community support, and students continually striving for success. Alton “Papa” Boyd’s legacy of outstanding dedication and service to the youth of Allen and his belief in quality education is being carried forward by the community of learners at the school named in his honor on February 20, 1978.
